Backseat journalism
Without prejudging newly-appointed Times-News Publisher Rosanne Cheeseman, one sadly notes that like all her predecessors here, she has no academic or professional journalism experience in her background. It’s all business, ad sales and marketing strategy.
Does that mean Times-News readers are doomed to yet another regime of beancounters where profit must be maximized at the expense of journalism, with no one at the top advocating for a better journalistic product? Will Erie journalism remain in the back seat?
In the second-day addendum to the announcement of his retirement, Jim Dible boasted of the Times-News’s recent award by the Pennsylvania Newspaper Assn. Foundation naming it the Newspaper of the year. But insiders know that this award is a circulating award. Sooner or later, every newspaper in the state which belongs to the PNA will have its turn, irrespective of merit. 2007 was just the Times-News’s time.
